Szostak Design believes that architecture, at its best, has the power to create meaningful experiences, connecting us to place and culture. Through deep research and client collaboration, we reveal each project’s unique context and deliver beautiful, modern reflections of our clients’ visions. Our firm is structured to provide hands-on principal involvement in every project we undertake, from conception to completion. Since its founding in 1980, Szostak Design has been repeatedly recognized for commitment to design excellence. In 2014, Szostak Design received the AIA North Carolina Firm of the Year Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a firm by the NC American Institute of Architects.
Phil Szostak, FAIA, Principal
In his forty years of experience in architectural design, Phil Szostak has demonstrated exceptional design ability in projects ranging from small renovations to complex, multi-million dollar facilities. Most recently, Phil designed and co-developed the Durham Performing Arts Center. He also designed the Aloft Hotel in Downtown Durham and guided renovations to the Capitol Broadcasting Company Headquarters in Raleigh. Other notable projects in the Szostak Design portfolio include renovations to the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem.
Phil’s work has been widely acknowledged, garnering numerous local, regional and national awards for design excellence over the course of his career, including the AIA North Carolina’s Kamphoefner Award for outstanding contributions to modernism in architecture (2010), the AIA NC’s Firm of the Year Award (2014), and the AIA NC’s F. Carter Williams Gold Medal (2018). In 2009, Phil was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
The Callista, one of Phil’s most personal projects to date, is an exciting undertaking for Phil and the entire Szostak Design team, all of whom are committed to the creative growth of Durham.
